The Creative Sobriety Method Pt. 1

THE ILLUMINATION
7

We cannot heal what we refuse to look at.

Welcome to The Illumination, Pt. 1 of The Creative Sobriety Method.

The illumination is where we pull all of the messy, scary, heavy shit out of the closet and into the light of day. There are people, places, experiences and ideas that have contributed to our escapism and the first step to changing that is acknowledging that. This is about highlighting the pain points in our lives, not blaming others for our behavior. We are choosing these things. It’s time to get real about why.

There are many reasons why we drink. Yours are unique to your life. Getting down to the bare bones of the thing is something only you can do for yourself, but below you’ll find some examples that may send you down the right path of inquiry.

*We are using alcohol to cope. There is a sense of discontentment within our relationships with others and/or ourselves. Alcohol is a way to bury down the disappointment and soften the blade of loneliness. Maybe we feel unfulfilled romantically, sexually, or emotionally with our partner. Maybe we feel our friends are only offering surface-level connection and we long to dive deeper or to feel comfortable sharing more intimately with the people we spend time with. Maybe our career is DOA and we feel stuck in a role we did not choose, doing work that does not serve our soul. Creativity may feel stifled or locked away and that lack of expression, the years spent not making things, and the unfinished projects in our desk drawer have begun to haunt us.
